After breakfast, I bid the brethren goodbye and set out on my return home by the way of Kahakuloa, Honokahau etc; stopped at Br. Geo. Raymond’s, he being appointed to go with me since he was ordained a priest. We left his place at Waihee about 10 or 11 o’clock and set out for Kahakuloa, the nearest village from Waihee, a distance of some 12 miles over as rough a road as need be traveled, running along parallel with the sea. Arrived at Kahakuloa about ½ 2 p.m. Went and saw the deacon of the Calvin Church and asked him for his church to preach in; he said that he was under his teacher and dare not do it. We asked him for his own house, but he refused in toto, said he did not want us to think that he rejected our testimony but he was willing to feed us etc. I preached to him from the scriptures and told him what we had come for; it was to offer life and salvation to this nation etc. From his house we went and saw the teacher of the Catholic Church, asked him for his church, he granted it to us. We held our meeting about 4 p.m., had a house full of natives. The house was not very large and a part of it was set off for an altar with the crucifix hanging over it, we were strictly forbidden to go inside where the altar was. I preached on the first principles; had a good flow if the spirit [and] language at first, but it got too warm for the Catholics and they began to disbelieve, then the spirit was quenched. After, one priest, Raymond, bore his testimony to good effect. Asked for the church to preach in again in the morning, but they refused very quickly. I believe good was done although none came forward for baptism, yet I feel that there will be a good branch raised up here.
[Met] a Spaniard by the name of Joseph Conception; he was very kind indeed to us and may the Lord reward him for it. He offered us his house to preach in if we wanted it. Got dinner with a native by the name Kanaiholo. Stayed all night with the Spaniard; he was born on the Island of Guam, he spoke English some. Talked a great deal both before and after meeting; tired and throat hoarse.
