Employed in tending meeting this morning. Spoke with freedom setting forth that we claimed no relationship with any church on the earth, and we did not want to. But this is a hard point for some of the young Saints to see into, especially those who are from the other church. (Br. Kaluau gave me 2 dollars in cash today.) I have one old man lately come in who was in the other church formerly. He is a deacon with us, but his head or heart appears to be rather thick for he does not appear to see any difference between our church and the other. But I pray the Lord to open his eyes that he may see and his heart that he may understand. In the afternoon it commenced blowing a gale of wind from the northeast, trades setting in a rare occurrence. Had some conversation with Messrs. Marston and Camel; they had been reading one of the Deseret newspapers, said they were pleased with [it], said it was not filled with robbing, murder, public courts etc like unto the papers of the day. It was a number in May for the Millennial Promise by Parley P. Pratt. I asked him how he liked it. Well, he said, it was not quite like what he had been brought up to etc. Also called on Mr. Edmundson, the tailor, to get a book.
